Pokemon Go fan turns their dog into game character by dying their fur bright yellow

In the few short weeks that it has been available around the world, Pokemon Go has invaded countless aspects of popular culture.

Just one day after its July 6 release date, it had already been installed on more Android devices than Tinder, and is now looking set to overtake Twitter when it comes to active users.

So it was perhaps only a matter of time before the craze went too far.

'They made their dog look like Pikachu,' the accompanying caption to the Facebook post reads.

The clip shows a small dog that has been dyed yellow in colour.

The pup also has dark stripes, in the style of Pikachu, as well as little red cheeks.

Viral video: A clip uploaded to Facebook shows that someone has dyed their dog the various shades of the popular Pokemon character Pikachu - the video has been viewed more than two million times

The 20-second video uploaded to Facebook shows the dog running around in a circle, before the dog is 'caught' by its owner.

The canine proceeds to roll over on its back at the end of the clip.

While the video has proven popular on social media - at last count it had been viewed 2.1 million times - it has not passed without a huge deal of controversy.

'Why would you even do that to any animal,' someone writes.

Caught you: The 20-second video uploaded to Facebook shows the dog running around in a circle, before the dog is 'caught' by its owner - people on social media have said that the act is cruel to the dog

'No wonder the world is f***ed up when there are a**holes who think that's ok [sic],' another posts directly.

Many have been quick to say that while they might be Pokemon fans, they think this act is animal cruelty.

'This is just the stupidest cruelest thing I've seen in a while [sic],' one person says.

'I love Pokémon, but this is just plain moronic! Learn to treat animals with respect!'.
