7 myths about parrots

Humans have been keeping parrots as pets since ages. There are many misconceptions or myths about parrots, some are taken as the fact and some are old wives tale. In this article we will help new parrot owners to know what is real and what is not.

1. PARROTS DO NOT GET LONELY

Parrots are very friendly and extremely social animals and they do well if they get enough attention. There is a reason that, they live in flocks in the wild and if you have decided to keep them as pets at your home then you need to know that, YOU are their ”flock” at the home. If you do not give your parrot enough, love and attention then i am sure you’ll end up with a completely different creature than the adorable one which you brought from the breeder! If parrots are not properly handled, then they can easily become screamers, feather pickers or just bad – tempered. So if you are adopting a parrot or already have one then it is recommended to play and talk with daily.

2. ALL PARROTS TALK

No one can guarantee that your bird will talk, but if you really want a talking parrot then you can increase the chances by buying that parrot who had talking parents. Most of the birds pick up words on their own and you need to know that behind every taking parrot, there is a human who has spent many hours in just making that parrot to learn. I have met many adorable parrots which do not talk at all and according to me, talking ability of a parrot should be the least imperative reason to consider if you are planning to get one.

3. PARROTS REQUIRE LESS ATTENTION THAN CATS OR DOGS

This is a myth 180 degrees opposite to the truth. Parrots are very social animals so they require much more attention and time than other pets. You will need to play and talk with him daily. Also you will have to keep the cage in a place of your house where all the members of family can interact with the lovable parrot easily, if your parrot is being left alone there is a chance of him to become depressed, lonely or bad-tempered. Keeping parrot in a cage all the time is actually a form of abuse so you need to let him out of the cage for some time but make sure to parrot- proof the room by switching off the fans, close the windows etc.

4. PARROTS ONLY EAT SEED

Seeds could be one of the most important parts of parrots’ diet but if you want him to stay healthy and live long life, they also need fresh vegetables and fruits. Nowadays several pellets are designed to give parrots the proper nutrition but you can vary pellets with other food which will provide him variety as, after all, no matter how much you love one food, you will not want to eat it every day and every time. Also, seeds are high in fat and if the birds are only eating seeds then they’re more prone to diseases. A good of parrot should include fruit, vegetables, pellets, rice and a VERY small amount of seeds.

5. PARROTS MIX WELL WITH OTHER ANIMALS

Some parrots can get along really well with other animals while other parrots don’t. You should NEVER let two different species interact without any supervision as one species of animal cannot understand the other’s body language. If you do this, then you are really risking trauma and injury to one or more animals.

6. PARROTS ARE LOW-MAINTENANCE ANIMALS

This is actually farther from the truth. I have already said that they need more attention and time than a cat or a dog. They are more delicate requiring you to be more careful in terms of caring for parrots. They need social interaction, special diet and certain equipment too, which includes bird toys, cage, parrot gyms and parrot toys. They need plenty of stimulating toys for their whole life unlike an adult dog who will outgrow their attraction towards toys. If you want to be a successful pet owner then you will need to invest money and time and also you must educate yourself on how to fulfill the needs of a parrot.

7. PARROTS ARE INTELLIGENT AS FIVE YEAR OLD CHILDREN

This is a very common myth which is not true at all but yes, they are very intelligent animals as they are fast learners, they live very long so maybe that’s why, they can actually learn a lot in their whole life. Also, the truth is that parrots are not children and they don’t even think like them, and you should not expect him to be. They’re birds and have their own peculiarity and abilities which we should respect and love.
